HHREC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and is governed by a multi-ethnic five member Board of Directors, including as its President, founding member Joel Clark. Since 1992, HHREC has contracted with Alameda County Department of Public Health and Behavioral Health Care Services to plan and implement environmental prevention programs. HHREC has blended health, art, media, and local residents to create a community-based prevention education strategy that addresses collective physical, mental, and spiritual healing. HHREC operates two primary programs: Health Through Art (HTA) and the Black Women’s Media Project (BWMP). HHREC has also planned, organized, and implemented many special projects for Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services: CalWORKs Media Campaign and Mental Health Public Awareness Campaign, an Assessment of Family Needs for Caregivers of the Mentally Ill and most recently working with AC BHCS and Berkeley Mental Health in separate processes related to Proposition 63 (Mental Health Services Act) Prevention & Early Intervention community-based needs assessments and data preparation. All projects engage community residents (including children, youth and adults) in organizing, and planning project activities and in designing project–related products, and because of this HHREC is consistently turned to as a reliable and effective resource for accessing community input and conducting outreach.
